چکیده

The Sprite operating system allows executing processes to be moved between hosts at any time. We use this process migration mechanism to offload work onto idle machines, and also to evict migrated processes when idle workstations are reclaimed by their owners. Sprite's migration mechanism provides a high degree of transparency both for migrated processes and for users. Idle machines are identified, and eviction is invoked, automatically by daemon processes. On Sprite it takes 40--50 milliseconds on DECstation 3100 workstations to perform a remote exec. The pmake program uses ezec-time migration to invoke compilations and other tasks concurrently, commonly producing speed-up factors in the range of three to six. Process migration has been in regular service for over

Utilizing Idle Workstations

The decreasing cost of personal workstations over recent years has led to their proliferation in computing environments. Studies have shown that personal workstations are under-utilized for long periods of time during regular working hours. This paper identiies this under-utilization as the idle-workstation problem. A taxonomy of computational models of systems that have attempted to solve the ...

Experience with Process Migration in Sprite

This paper reports on experience with the Sprite process migration facility. Sprite provides transparent remote execution to support load sharing through the use of idle workstations. Process migration is used to reclaim workstations when their owners return. On Sun 3/75 workstations, the cost of selecting an idle host and invoking a remote process is about 400 milliseconds. This time is substa...

CRAK: Linux Checkpoint/Restart As a Kernel Module

Process checkpoint/restart is a very useful technology for process migration, load balancing, crash recovery, rollback transaction, job controlling and many other purposes. Although process migration has not yet been widely used and is not widely available commercial systems, the growing shift of computing facilities from supercomputers to networked workstations and distributed systems is incre...

A survey of load sharing in networks of workstations

This paper is a survey of existing policies and mechanisms for load sharing in loosely-coupled distributed computing systems, where user machines are personal workstations interconnected by a local area network. We are interested only in centralized operating systems providing mechanisms for remote process communication, thus we do not study distributed operating systems in which load balancing...

Attitude toward migrate abroad in Iranian medical community: a qualitative study

Intellectual and human capital is one of the main foundations of the countries' growth and development, and the lack of such capital makes development process difficult. The migration of specialists and scientists and its trend as elite migration, especially the migration of physicians, is one of the problems that has plagued the scientific management policy of many countries around the worl...
